Science Writing and Technical Writing

Before becoming a patent agent or attorney, I spent the years after college mainly as a writer. (I also did some computer programming, in Fortran, on the car-sized monoliths that passed for computers in the last millenium.)

My stints in writing included marketing copy for direct mail (junk mail, precursor of spam, destroyer of rain forests!!), scripting training videos for government and corporate clients, and science writing and technical writing.

I spent over a decade in technical writing, mostly working for small-to-medium sized technology companies, many of them long-since absorbed into larger corporate entities. Probably the biggest two clients were the National Association of Securities Dealers, for whom I documented a vast suite of certification testing software; and Ciena, a communications hardware company which actually still exists under its original name.

Technical Writing

This document excerpts four technical documents I've created during my career:
(1) A Users Guide for software to monitor fiber-optic network activity;
(2) a White Paper on advanced antenna technology;
(3) hardware/software API documentation for a spectrum analyzer chip; and
(4) a Users Guide for network simulation software.

Science Writing

This document contains three articles on science I wrote early in my career:
(1) A Profile of Young Physicist Wunderkind Stephen Wolfram;
(2) An Article on Fiber Optics, back when fiber optics was very, very new; and
(3) A software review of an early version of Mathcad mathematics software
