A Lifetime In Patents and Technical Communications

•

Patent drafting/prosecution for software & electronics

•

Users Guides for GUIs for commercial/industrial software

•

Hardware architecture documentation

•

Design specifications

•

API documentation

•

Science writing for popular audiences

•

Script writing for training films

I have provided these services to corporate, government, and military clients, both as an independent contractor and as a law firm employee.

Better writing entails not just effective use of language. It is buttressed by strong interview skills, and an ability to work well with inventors. My extensive experience both in science journalism and technical writing, as well as patent work, are the foundation for a strong rapport with subject matter experts.

Graphics Arts Proficiency

In the 1980s I was working at Booz Allen & Hamilton, and I had the joy of learning graphics arts and page design on the very first Macintosh's. I spent the bulk of my time creating system diagrams and drawings on McDraw for classified defense projects.

I've been at it ever since, now on PCs and typically using Visio and various PhotoShop-clones.  I miss those early Macs; those machines were simple yet so elegant. (While at Booz Allen, I also spent a year coding in Fortran, which back then was not so elegant.)

Professional Experience

•

Over forty patent applications drafted and illustrated in full, spanning electronics, software, e-commerce, internet, bio-medical technologies, biometrics, mechanical applications, and business methods

•

Two years (and ongoing) as a patent agent (now attorney) on contract with Addition, Higgins & Pendlton, a North Carolina IP boutique law firm

•

Three and a half-years as a patent agent with Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox, a large DC-based IP boutique law firm. In addition to extensive patent drafting, I prosecuted over one hundred applications, writing hundreds of replies to USPTO office actions. I worked multiple pre-appeal briefs and reissues

•

Six years developing my own start-up (http://www.ImagiStar.com), including drafting of issued U.S. patent 9,224,096 to Oppenheimer. Several continuations, divisionals, and international applications are pending.

•

One year responding to office actions and editing draft patent applications for several DC area law firms on a contract basis.

•

Fifteen years documenting software (including GUIs, APIs, internal data structures), electronics, telecommunications, biotechnologies, and other advanced technologies for a variety of high technology companies

•

While skilled in communicating complex ideas, I also write on science for general audiences. Fresh out of college I wrote for popular audiences for Science Digest Magazine (the "Discover Magazine" of the 1980's).

Management/Supervisory Experience

Over the years I have had multiple opportunities to supervise and coach individual team members in various organizations. At the law firm of Sterne, Kessler I routinely relied on the support of paralegal and secretarial staff; in turn I worked with the newer team members (especially paralegals fresh out of college, talented but still with things to learn...) to help get them oriented on the job.

More recently, in running my own own start-up company (ImagiStar.com), I've been hiring and supervising programmers and technical writers, from college students to experienced levels.
